In a significant victory, India has been overwhelming been elected to the UN statistical commission for a 4-year period beginning on 1st January 2024 in a “Competitive election”, in which China and south Korea are still vying for the remaining seat from the Asia pacific category.

India secured an overwhelming 46 out of 53 votes. A second candidate is yet to be decided between south Korea and China and the balloting process will resume later in the day for electing the remaining Asia pacific states member.

Whereby votes secured by South Korea (23), China (19), and UAE (15). On the other hand, the current members from the Asia pacific states are Japan(2024), Samoa (2024), as well as Kuwait and the republic of Korea, whose terms are ending this year.

NOTE- India was elected by the economic and social council (ECOSOC) of the united nation as a member of the UN Statistical Commission, the commission on Narcotic Drugs and the program Coordinating Board of the joint UN Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). These are important subsidiary bodies of the ECOSOC.

The Statistical commission is the highest body dealing with international Statistical activities and is responsible for standards setting in the field of statistics. India was a member of the statistical Commission last in 2004. Thus, India is returning to the statistical commission after a gap of two decades.

Where the commission on Narcotic Drugs supervises the application of international drug control treaties, while the program Coordinating board of UNAIDS supports and provides strategic direction for an international response to HIV/AIDS.

HOW ARE MEMBERS OF UN STATISTICAL COMMISSION ELECTED?

The commission consists of 24-member countries of the United Nations elected by the United nation Economic and Social council on the basis of an equitable Geographical distribution according to the following pattern:

  • 5 members from African state
  • 4 members from Asia-Pacific States
  • 4 members from eastern Europe states
  • 4 members from Latin America and Caribbean states
  • 7 members from western European and other states

Where the term of the office of members is 4 years.

WHAT WOULD BE THE SIGNIFICANCE?

The statistical commission oversees the work of the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD). One of the best-known sub-units of the Statistics division is the United Nations group of experts on geographical names (UNGEGN), also known as the United Nations Conference on the Standardization of geographical names (UNCSGN).

This unit tries to harmonize place names across alphabets, languages, and cultural boundaries. India can benefit from this like we can consider the situation where China caused a commotion by accusing India of naming the Indian Ocean after the country and immediately demanding that its name be changed. They did this by blaming India for the ocean's naming and instigating a dispute to change it.
